The way I paint this is by carving out the image with the actual paints. As the strokes come on, I begin to see what’s happening and go with it, stroking my way through, adding more of darks and lights until something emerges. I can probably take the easier route by making the image and then stroking on top, but it won’t feel the same. The depth comes from the feeling it through, the unknown, the back and forth, and the struggle. Every few minutes I stand back - what do I see, what do I need to add or take away? Feeling my way through the painting. And here it is: Jerusalem, so deep with blue hues.
There are plenty of metallics that don’t show in the image, but the painting shines in person.
